Most prominent photography fair in the Germanspeaking region

From its inaugural edition in 2015, photo basel has cemented its profile as the most prominent photography fair in the Germanspeaking region. Bringing together galleries from around the world, the fair fosters a dialogue between members of the photographic and broader art world communities, attracting collectors, visual art experts and international media at a key moment in the annual art world calendar (Art Basel week).

photo basel has a great potential : a great location, a great team spirit and a core of quality galleries that firmly intend to make it successful!

Special Projects

Vintage Cabinet

This year marks the third iteration of the Master Cabinet which presents a selection of vintage prints provided by the participating galleries; all of which are for sale and will be curated by Pauline Guex on the thematic of the sound dimension of photography.

Hommage to Arnold Odermatt

In addition, photo basel dedicates a curated exhibition to the recently deceased Swiss photographer Arnold Odermatt.

NFT Cabinet

In collaboration with Samsung, photo basel introduces the first ever NFT cabinet – featuring digital photographic positions to be seen, experienced, and bought at the fair.

Flooded art project

Extreme floods have shattered parts of Germany (and Europe) this past July. Unavoidable, it has destroyed many businesses and did not make a halt from galleries and their respective art storages. So it did in the case of German gallery Artco (Berlin, Aachen and Cape town). To demonstrate what so called “flooded art” looks like – photo basel dedicates a small sector to this new form of destroyed art and hopes to highlight the impact of the climate on various aspects of our lives.

Swiss Grand Award for Design 2021 – Winner Peter Knapp

Since 2007, the Swiss Federal Office of Culture presents this prestigious award. This year’s winner, acclaimed fashion photographer Peter Knapp, will shoot individual portraits during the official fair hours at photo basel. (Parts of the benefits will run into helping the flooded art project).
