MIRALL: Jaume Plensa in La Llotja, Palma de Mallorca

With MIRALL, Jaume Plensa is opening an extraordinary exhibition in the historic La Llotja in Palma de Mallorca. From 19 September 2024 to 15 February 2025, he will bring together the past, present and future in a field of dialogue and tension.

La Llotja, once the commercial centre of Mallorca and a symbol of economic and social change for over 600 years, becomes the stage for Plensas reflection on the present day. The exhibition includes two monumental stainless steel sculptures positioned back to back in the centre of the Gothic building. These works, minimalist yet powerful, act as symbolic ‘energy units’ that charge the space with body and soul, light and darkness, transparency and opacity.

Plensas art adds a new dimension to La Llotja. As the name of the exhibition (Mirall, Catalan for ‘mirror’) suggests, his sculptures reflect the issues of the present and invite visitors to reflect on the interaction between past and future.

Jaume Plensa: The master of dialogue between art and space

Plensa’s work is often in dialogue with its surroundings, and MIRALL is no exception. La Llotja, a place that breathes stories of commerce and human interaction, provides the perfect stage for Plensa’s work. The artist himself describes this encounter as something special, as the architecture and history of the building enhance his sculptures in a unique way.

An artist of international calibre

In addition to MIRALL, Jaume Plensas work weltweit zu sehen. can be seen all over the world. Famous installations such as the Crown Fountain in Chicago or Dream in the UK illustrate his endeavour to make art accessible to everyone. His works are not only aesthetic objects, but also bear profound questions about humanity, language and time.

The essence of MIRALL

With this exhibition, Plensa succeeds in immersing the visitor in a reflection on fundamental themes of our time – an interplay of light and shadow, history and modernity. The two sculptures in La Llotja are not only works of art but also tools for transforming space and deepening the understanding of community and identity.

Visitors can experience MIRALL until February 2025 and gain an insight into Plensa’s universal yet intimate philosophy of art.
