The Origins of Perfumery
Perfume has its roots in incense, which has been used since the second millennium BC. The Latin word “perfumum” literally means “through smoke,” referring to the method of burning fragrant materials. Incense has long held a mystical allure and served as a sacred connection between the profane and the divine, the visible and the invisible, and as a means of purification for the Egyptian gods.

From the Visible to the Invisible
Jean Laporte is an avid traveler. During a journey to the Middle East, he discovered incense, also known as olibanum. This fragrance is extracted from the resin of a tree that grows along the shores of the Red Sea. To stay true to its original essence, Mathilde Bijaoui, the perfumer behind La Cérémonie de l’Encens, has harmonized it with cedarwood and pepper. The result is a serene, flowing composition of notes that captures the mystical connection between the physical world and the supernatural.
