An Extraordinary Artist in London
The Serpentine Galleries in London present Remembering, the first institutional solo exhibition of Indian artist Arpita Singh in the British capital. From March 20 to July 27, 2025, the Serpentine North will showcase works spanning over six decades of her artistic career. Singh’s work blends surrealism and figuration with traditional Indian painting styles—often characterized by powerful colors and emotionally charged scenes.

The Power of Memory in Color and Symbolism
Singh’s works explore personal memories, social unrest, and universal emotions, with a particular focus on the role of women. Her well-known piece Devi Pistol Wali (1990) portrays the many-armed Hindu goddess Devi in a white sari, holding a pistol, flowers, and a mango—reinterpreting mythological symbols in a modern context. Equally fascinating is A Feminine Tale (1995), one of her rare reverse paintings on acrylic, depicting a contemplative woman surrounded by abstract symbols.

Insights into Urban Landscapes and Social Structures
Alongside figurative works, the exhibition features large-scale cityscapes. In My Lollipop City: Gemini Rising (2005), Singh weaves urban elements with astrological signs, surreal figures, and personal symbols. Her works are known for their multilayered meanings, revealing themselves gradually to the viewer.

Art as a Mirror of Social Processes
Since the 1990s, Singh has increasingly explored themes such as gender, motherhood, and political violence. Her multifaceted work challenges existing narratives and invites viewers to rethink their perception of history and the present.

More Than an Exhibition: A Comprehensive Catalogue
Accompanying the exhibition is the most extensive publication on Singh in the last ten years, featuring contributions from renowned art historians like Geeta Kapur and Geetanjali Shree, the 2022 Booker Prize winner.
