At the heart of the interior design of Dubai’s newest gourmet temple, Akabeko, created by 4SPACE, is the interplay between light and shadow. Traditional Japanese aesthetics meet modern design in the extravagant city of Dubai.
One of the core insights of Zen Buddhism is the acceptance that nothing in this world is permanent—everything is in a state of constant transformation. Few places exemplify this idea as vividly and dynamically as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where change and vibrant energy have become a societal maxim.
Some of the most striking manifestations of this ever-changing environment can be found off the coast of Dubai, the UAE’s most populous city. Here, in the azure waters of the Persian Gulf, humans have created artificial island formations in the shape of stylized palm trees. The most famous of these, „The Palm Jumeirah“,has been home to over 5,000 buildings, 30 hotels, and more than 25,000 residents for the past twenty years—stretching across 560 hectares.
Yakiniku Dining in a Sophisticated Ambience
For those seeking tranquility amidst the city’s energetic hustle Akabeko is a must-visit destination. Not only is it Dubai’s premier address for high-end Japanese grilled cuisine, known as Yakiniku, but it also captivates with an extraordinary interior design by 4SPACE, particularly its elaborate lighting concept.

Tucked away within the trunk of the artificial island, Akabeko offers a rich selection of dishes. Apart from a few vegetarian options, the menu is a true tribute to the revered Japanese Wagyu beef and its traditional preparation methods. The restaurant follows a “nose-to-tail” philosophy, ensuring that even lesser-used cuts of beef are honored in the culinary process. For Akabeko’s head chef, Yosuke Matusoka, this approach embodies sustainable gastronomy and a deep respect for the animal.
A Mythical Red Cow as a Symbol of Good Fortune
But beef is not just the foundation of Akabeko’s menu—it is also its thematic and visual centerpiece. The restaurant’s name, “Akabeko,” originates from a mythological figure in the form of a red cow, which holds a prominent place in Japanese folklore. According to legend, this red cow brought blessings and health to people in Japan’s Fukushima Prefecture after an earthquake in the 17th century.

Wabi-Sabi as a Design Concept
Akabeko’s philosophy is deeply rooted in Wabi-Sabi, an aesthetic concept closely linked to Zen Buddhism. It emphasizes contemplation of impermanence, appreciation for the beauty of everyday simplicity, and the poetry of imperfection.
This concept is tangibly reflected in Akabeko’s interior. Natural materials, textured surfaces, and minimalist forms create a canvas on which 4SPACE’s lighting design—mostly indirect—forms ever-changing patterns and shadows. As one of the UAE’s most renowned architecture and interior design firms, 4SPACE is known for seamlessly integrating light and space through meticulously balanced design elements.

- The signature red color runs through the entire design concept. The aesthetic follows the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi.
- Natural stone, wood, and textiles with rich textures create a warm, organic atmosphere.
- A dark, muted color palette is complemented by deep red accents and the calming green of bonsai trees.
To prevent the space from feeling heavy, open layouts and thoughtful table arrangements create a harmonious balance.
Sustainable Grilling with Cutting-Edge Technology
For 4SPACE’s award-winning design team, led by Firas Alsahin and Amjad Hourieh, the emphasis on elegant simplicity and natural aesthetics was not just a matter of design but also of sustainability. The restaurant’s grills are specially designed to minimize energy consumption and eliminate smoke, ensuring a refined dining atmosphere while reducing environmental impact.

- Shoji-inspired wooden sliding doors create intimate private dining areas.
- Large bonsai trees serve as authentic, natural décor.
- Energy-efficient, smokeless grills preserve both ambience and sustainability.
A Design Award for Akabeko
Akabeko masterfully blends Japanese tradition with cutting-edge, responsible design. This exquisite concept earned 4SPACE the prestigious “Interior Design of the Year – Food & Beverage Casual” award at the Commercial Interior Design (CID) Awards 2024 in Dubai.

The Commercial Interior Design Awards organized by Commercial Interior Design magazine, part of ITP Media Group celebrate outstanding achievements in interior design across the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa).

While Dubai is known for its rapid transformation, one can only hope that the impermanence of all things spares this extraordinary gourmet temple for a long time to come. As Buddhist wisdom teaches: true beauty lies in the fleeting nature of existence.
