Enchanting, timeless, to fall in love with: Torre del Nera is an Albergo Diffuso that was created from existing features in a medieval village in Umbria. And this is the story of the special holiday architecture – made in Italy.
Once upon a time…
Travelling in Umbria feels a bit like opening a fairytale book. Here you travel from hill to hill through picturesque landscapes and medieval villages. You wouldn’t be surprised if a knight suddenly rode past on his horse or a fairy wrapped a piece of forest in a mystical light. One of the particularly enchanting Umbrian villages is Scheggino in the province of Perugia, where old stone houses nestle on top of each other on a hill. Some of them belong to Torre del Nera, an Albergo Diffuso, a scattered hotel.
In life there are things to do and opportunities to take
Gabriele Giannattasio
During a business trip, entrepreneur Gabriele Giannattasio discovered the deserted village of Scheggino, which seemed to be abandoned despite its fantastic natural surroundings. He decided to breathe new life into the village and opened a hotel. But not one that was centred on a single building and had to be specially constructed. Instead, he restored several houses scattered around the village, in the spirit of Umbrian tradition.
Historical charm
To preserve the charm of the old days, the walls have been artfully painted with natural colours. The furniture and decorations, including restored boxes, chests and beds as well as handmade lamps, are a declaration of love to the surroundings. The atmosphere is inviting, cosy and warm.
The main building with its frescoed walls, wooden beams and old terracotta floors is home to 12 carefully renovated rooms, a spa and the restaurant La Locanda del Cavaliere. The narrow cobbled streets lead to the historic houses with 16 suites. Named after the inhabitants of Scheggino, they offer guests fully equipped flats.
Torre del Nera is therefore an Albergo Diffuso, a very special category of sustainable accommodation. It offers an authentic and genuine way to get to know Umbria. A guest at Torre del Nera becomes a temporary villager. And perhaps even a bit like a prince or a lady, a knight or even a fairy?
